(i)                  Tsunami 2004

Tsunami 2004 with the magnitude of 9.1 at Richter scale was the second greatest earthquake ever recorded in human history, death toll from this disaster was more than 230000 people; scale of the Tsunami was massive, it affected countries far and wide from India to Indonesia.

According to experts this natural disaster was occurred by an under water earthquake caused by the friction of Indian tectonic plates and another plate; according to latest research energy released by this great Tsunami was close to 1.1×10¹⁷ joules, 1502 times more than Hiroshima atom bomb.

(ii) Kashmir Earthquake 2005

One of the most destructive earthquakes of this decade, its magnitude was 7.6 at Richter scale, it left almost 80000 people dead in different parts of Pakistan,Azad Kashmir, occupied Kashmir and Afghanistan, approximately 8 million people were directly affected by this earthquake.

According to latest research this natural disaster was followed by more than 978 aftershocks till 27 October,2005; analysts say that this  catastrophe was caused by the collision of  Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates, figures tells us that 25 % of the  buildings near epicenter collapsed and more than 50 % were severely damaged.

(iii)                Haiti Earthquake 2010

On January 12,2010,a  massive earthquake of Magnitude -7 created havoc in  Haiti, a French speaking Caribbean country in which more than 100000 people died; according to experts this was most destructive earthquake in Haitian history.

According to news reports in this tragedy whole infrastructure of the city collapsed, including national penitentiary, the Parliament Building and the National Cathedral; Seismographic experts say  that this earthquake was caused due to movement of Enriquillo-Plaintain Garden fault system past each other.

(iv)               2003 European Heatwave

2003 Europe heat wave was one of the worst heat waves of entire European history; it took lives of more than 35000 people; France was the most affected country, in France approximately 14,802 people died from this catastrophe, Germany was the second most affected country it  suffered  losses of nearly 7000 lives.

(v)              Iran Earthquake 2003

On 26 December, 2003 a powerful earthquake of magnitude-6 struck Bam, south eastern city of Iran; according to an estimate this disaster left more than 26000 people dead, its epicenter was 6 miles southwest of the old Bam city.

According to the reports,damage done by the earthquake was huge, it left thousand people homeless and most of the residential houses were completely destroyed; this earthquake was caused by the motion of Arabian plate.

They are active across 200 Indian districts ( 40 percent of Indian geographical area) ; in 2007 Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared Maoists as the “single biggest internal security challenge facing India”; now the question is who really are Maoists?

History tells us that Maoist movement started when a farmer was attacked in West Bengal in 1967 over a land dispute; Maoist movement was led by Charu Majumdar and Kanu Sanyal who were of the view that they should overthrow indian Government due to cruel  policies and Mao Zedong was their ideal.

India’s intelligence agency RAW has reported that 20,000 armed cadre Naxalites were operating apart from 50,000 regular cadres along with their hundreds of supporters.

According to latest reports more than 2600 people have been killed in Maoist insurgency related violence since 2006; this is very challenging situation for Indian Government  who has recently planned to deploy 70000 paramilitary personnel against maoists.
